Eating for Two

Pregnancy is no time to skimp on nutrition. It is a time to make smart eating choices and focus on healthy weight gain, regardless of your pre-pregnancy size.

The foundation for your baby's growth and development is sound nutrition. When you limit calories, you restrict the important nutrients you need for maintaining the health of both you and your baby.

Of course, there's a flip side, too. A study led by Cornell University found that women who gain more than the amount recommended during pregnancy are four times more likely to be obese one year after giving birth, compared with mothers who gain within the recommended range. Other experts believe that pregnancy is one of those times in a woman's life when she can add fat cells to her body. Women who gain more than they should, may be adding fat cells that will be a part of them for life; the more fat cells, the more difficult it is to lose weight and keep it off.
